Obituary
John R. Coelho was born on January 6, 1927 in Chowchilla, Ca. He moved with his family at a young age and grew up on a ranch on Turner Island Road in Dos Palos where he continued to farm until his retirement. He attended local schools and graduated from Dos Palos High School in 1945. Shortly after, he and his twin brother Francis were drafted and served in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II. After his discharge from the Army, he returned home and shortly after married Marie Sallaberry, the love of his life. They had one daughter Celeste (Sally). John was a very hard-working man who loved his family and friends above all else. His passion was farming, designing, retrofitting and building equipment. His big smile and fun personality will be missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
In his younger years, John was an active member of the National Farmer’s Organization (NFO) having served as President of the Merced County Chapter; Toastmasters; Dos Palos Co-Op Gin; and bowling league.
John is preceded in death by his wife Marie B. Coelho; Parents: Frank R. and Anna J. Coelho; Parents in-law Peter and Augustine Sallaberry; brothers Victor R. and Francis R. Coelho.
Survivors include his daughter Celeste (Sally) Coelho-Hudson; Son-in-law Bailey O. Hudson; Nephews: Robert, David and Paul Coelho; Nieces: Vickie Moss, Terri Coelho and Patricia Coelho; numerous great nephews, and cousins; his beloved Border Collie Blackie; and many beloved friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 3, 2013 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Whitehurst Funeral Chapel. The rosary and funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 starting at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Los Banos District Cemetery.
