Obituary
Mary Alice (Sousa) Gomes passed away surrounded by her family on February 27, 2025 in Los Banos, California. Mary was born on July 25, 1931 in Farmersville, California to Antonio and Mary (Dias) Sousa. At a young age Mary and her family moved to Los Banos, California where she lived a long-blessed life of 93 years. Mary met the love of her life Joe Coelho Gomes in 1950 and they married on March 26, 1951and were married for 63 years until his passing in 2014.
Mary was a secretary at the Los Banos Creamery before she stopped to raise her family of five children. Once her children were all of school age, she began a new career working for the Los Banos School District until her retirement in 1993. Mary was also a member of Our Lady of Fatima Society and the DES in Los Banos and a faithful member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Los Banos.
Mary was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great-grandmother where wonderful and delicious treats were always available from her kitchen and greeted with open arms and a big smile. She will be always missed by all that knew her with a void that can never be filled but a legacy that will continue through her example to those she touched.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe Gomes, brother Tony Sousa, sister Evelyn Miranda and great grandsons Jonathan Auldridge and Joseph Gonzales. Mary is survived by her children: Dennis (Ron Mezo) of Souto de Lafões, Portugal, Lynne (Paul) Carrasco of Santa Clara, Raymond (Kim) of Los Banos, JoAnne (Steve) Birdsall of Dos Palos and Joe Jr of Los Banos. Mary leaves 11 grandchildren, 23 additional great grandchildren and 4 great great-granddaughters. In addition, Mary is survived by her sister Carmen Miranda of Los Banos, and sisters-in-law Beverly Sousa of Los Banos and Eva Gomes of Bakersfield.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with the recital of the rosary at 10:00 AM followed by mass at 10:30 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and graveside burial service at the Los Banos Cemetery in Los Banos.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be offered to Our Lady of Fatima Society and the DES in Los Banos in Mary's memory.
Services are under the direction of Whitehurst Funeral Chapel-Los Banos.
